Grants On-line Digest (G.O.L.D.)
A free monthly E-mail publication of DaveFarley.com (dba: The Grant Doctors). It's a newsletter, a column, a discussion of issues related to grants for novices and experts alike. In it, you will find: Tips & techniques for writing proposals and searching for grants; New grant announcements; Strategies for collaboration; Answers to frequently asked questions; Questions & Answers to/from G.O.L.D. subscribers.
 
IRS Non-Profit List
The IRS has added a search engine on its web site to allow donors and others to search electronically to find out whether a charity or a foundation is considered by the government to be a legitimate non-profit organization. Updated quarterly but the information in the listing is limited.

GOVERNMENT GRANTS

Catalog of Federal Domestic Assistance
An excellent place to begin searching for federal funding programs. This source is published by the federal government. This manual provides the most comprehensive information on federal funds, cross-indexed by agency, program type, applicant eligibility, and subject. A government publication available in many libraries, describing federal government programs which provide funds or nonfinancial assistance to state and local governments, public agencies, organizations, institutions, and individuals. Included are the program's legislative authority, explanations of each program, types of assistance provided, restrictions, eligibility requirements, financial information, application and award procedures, information contacts, and related programs. Updated information on federal programs and grant awards appears in the daily Federal Register, also available from the Government Printing Office.
 
Commerce Business Daily
Reports government contracting opportunities. This site is searchable.
 
Nonprofit Gateway
A central starting point to help nonprofit organizations access online federal information and services. Linked to all cabinet departments and many agencies, it contains information about grants, regulations, taxes and other services.
 
Money Matters
The US Department of Education provides listings of federal grants for educational purposes. This site also shows guidelines and regulations set forth by the Department of Education.
 
The Student Guide
A most comprehensive resource for financial assistance for students.
 
State Grants
Lists government agencies in each US state that provide grants to nonprofit organizations in their area.

FOUNDATION GRANTS:

There are four types of foundations.

  1. Independent foundations: established by an independent person or family; most common type of foundation.
  2. Company-sponsored foundations: also called corporate foundations; created and funded by businesses.
  3. Operating foundations: established to operate research, social welfare, or other charitable programs or projects; board decides what is worthwhile to fund.
  4. Community foundations: supported by and run for the benefit of a specific community.
The Foundation Center
A nonprofit organization which gathers and disseminates information on foundations. The Center's library in San Francisco, contains copies of foundations' tax returns, extensive collections of books, documents, and reports about the foundation field, and current files on the activities and programs of about 37,000 U.S. foundations, plus knowledgeable staff to assist users in locating appropriate information. THIS IS ONR OF THE BEST RESOURCES FOR GRANT SEEKERS! It is highly recommended to go to the Foundaiton Center (located at 312 Sutter Street, San Francisco), browse the resources, and speak with the librarians on staff.
 
FindIt.Org
Provides information for nonprofits including answers to business and legal questions. Links include fundraising resources, marketing, news, technology, nonprofit dictionary, and how to find a nonprofit.
 
Community Foundations by State
Provides links by state to publicly supported grant making organizations. These organizations are public charities, and the support they provide reaches a diversity of interests.
 
Private Foundations on the Web
Produced by Internet Prospector, lists, summarizes, and provides links to private foundations.
 
Guidestar
Provides information on finances and activities of over 650,000 non-profit organizations. A donor can search GuideStar's online database for a report on a nonprofit organization by its location, revenue, key word or activity field.

CORPORATE GRANTS

Within the past decade, as government funding on the federal, state, and local levels has declined, there has been a steady increase in grant seekers pursuing corporate support. Many corporations provide funds for local projects in areas where they have their headquarters or plants, or sponsor projects which somehow enhance their corporate image.
